Dr. Wayne Bennett is a trumpeter and music educator based in Atlanta, bringing over twenty years of experience as both performer and teacher. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, where he studied with Dr. Edward Bach, and earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Georgia, where he worked with former Canadian Brass trumpeter Fred Mills.
Wayne founded Gate City Brass in 2017, a professional brass quintet that has performed in venues ranging from intimate coffee shops to formal concert halls, including collaborations with ensembles such as Georgia Festival Chorus and OurSong Atlanta. The group has released two recordings and presents the majority of its concerts independently throughout the Southeast. He also co-founded Jamescliff Music Publishing, which has produced numerous compositions and arrangements for chamber brass, from classical transcriptions to original works and seasonal music.
As an educator, Dr. Bennett currently serves on the music faculties of Georgia State University’s Perimeter College and Agnes Scott College, teaching applied trumpet, music theory, and aural skills. He maintains a focused private studio, working with dedicated trumpet students from middle school through college. His teaching approach emphasizes developing effective practice strategies and helping students overcome technical challenges. Dr. Bennett has guided students from initial frustration with the instrument to successful college auditions, and has particular expertise in rebuilding fundamental techniques when needed. His methods focus on mindful practice, strategic repetition, and making the learning process engaging and sustainable.
Bennett performs as principal trumpet with the Lawrenceville Symphony Orchestra and has appeared with ensembles throughout the Southeast. A Bach trumpet endorsing artist, he is active as a clinician and has presented masterclasses and workshops at schools and conferences, including “The 5 Points Warm-up and Technical Routine” at the 2018 International Trumpet Guild Conference.
Dr. Bennett has served as Artist Faculty and Adjudicator for the National Trumpet Competition and contributed reviews to the International Trumpet Guild Journal. Drawing from his own experience with rebuilding and refining his playing throughout his career, he brings both technical expertise and genuine understanding to helping students navigate their own musical challenges and growth.
